There are too many drop downs and fly outs. Every time I move my mouse across the screen I'm deluged with the drop down or fly out info which covers the stories or headlines I'm trying to read. Is there a way I can disable these so that I need to click to get the drop down or fly out information?

I'm wondering why your site looks so wonderful on my home computer, but not-so-great on my work computer (broken links, no "rainbow" colors in the banner, text overlapping text, etc.) I use Explorer 7.0 for both computers. Are there settings I need to enable/disable to view it properly? Thanks.

Nope, I like triggering them when I roll/hover over them. It's faster and more efficient.

I appreciate that you mentioned the fly-outs in this post, as it seems to be my one criticism of all the versions of MSNBC.com.

I appreciate that they're there, as they offer a nice skim of the headlines without having to move around the page too much, but... as you've offered, I'd prefer they operate with a click, rather than a rollover.

I've moved the mouse inadvertently many times over the menu and had a fly-out block my view of what I was going for or reading.

Please consider altering the fly-out to open on 'click' rather than 'rollover.'

I'm using Firefox and there's something about the new home page and section fronts that drives me crazy. When I first open one of these pages, a large while area appears below the main headline sections. A few seconds later, everything under there "jumps" up so it's flush with the headline area. Same thing on section fronts; Often I'll see text superimposed over the "pin boxes". I'm using cable/T1 so not sure why that's happened. Anyone else having this issue?

At work, it all looks great. At home, it only looks great with Norton Internet Security disabled. If it is enabled, I only see the top layer of info with a lot of white space underneath, one title bar, the flyouts to the left and part of the footer of the page.

Love the new site, but can't understand why it wont save my settings if i clear out my history/cookies, etc...i understand that things are stored that way -- BUT, if i'm logged into my MSN account then it can be saved under that -- i clear out my history quite a bit and would love to not have to put my zip code in and re-arange my page each time i do...just link my changes to my msn account and things will be perfect...

I couldn't possibly agree more. Ignoring the fact that merely moving the mouse across the screen (for whatever reason) may unintentionally active the fly-outs was a major design flaw. Please fix it! Thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for getting rid of that huge banner ad at the top of the page. I hope it's disappearance is not a fluke.

Regarding the fly-outs. Personally, I like them. HOWEVER, it would be nice if they weren't so "touchy". The second (or more correctly nano-second) the mouse rolls over a link, at the top or side, the contents menu opens up.

What would be better IMHO is to set the time it takes to open up just a little longer, by allowing our mouse to cross over a link without instantaneously opening. How about allowing the mouse to hover over link for 2 seconds BEFORE the content opens up? As it is, I find myself trying to avoid moving my mouse over the top links when I need to get to my browser menu.

Why not make clicking on the (disabled) fly-out produce the flyout instead of navigating away to the Section page? GREAT IDEA! I've wondered for years why you didn't do this. WHile I hate most of the new re-design, this would be a big step forward!

Having gotten over the initial shock, I am now figuring out what changes I actually am irked by.

Flyouts: I have always loved them. However, the drop down flyouts are located between the links on the site below and the tabs and buttons of my browser above, which means I am constantly making these huge menus pop up in front of the headlines I am trying to read. I have turned off the flyouts despite the fact that I would like to use the ones on the left.

World, US & Politics: This is the news I care about. Now someone has apparently decided that all three put together are about as important as travel news. I've set it to 15 stories, but would love to see more. I doubt there is a lack of content, so I have to assume it was a poor editorial decision.

Other than that, I am happy with the site. I love the personalizationability of the site as well as the new look.

I'm noticing Michael's "jump" issue too, it looks like the top-stories div loads as too tall, then resets itself to a smaller height.

I think that would be a major improvement. I hate how the new flyovers appear, and then submenu's keep popping up to cover my screen. As it is, I have to find a clear space to click on to make the flyovers go away, which is much harder with recent changes. When I want to access the flyover menu, I would like it to require a click to activate.

In general, I like the new look -- although I have to admit, it's a bit tougher to quickly scan the news. A few minor problems: I thought I had read that videos would work with Safari on the Mac -- but they don't. And personalization (especially weather) still has a few big kinks to work out. However, I'm impressed by the way you're responding quickly to problems and requests -- that alone is worth noting!

Love the new design, but I'd like to register another vote for "click for fly-outs." The fly-outs are very handy, but they're intrusive in the new design, triggering very easily, and covering the page content. I don't want to disable them, but having them open only when clicked would be a help.

Not bad but a few improvements:
Flyouts - already complained about enough, just fix.
Too much white space on the page making scrolling mandatory and I have a 21 inch monitor, shrink line spacing a little.
Top Banner - Too big, padding on bottom could be shrunk along with hyperlink text.
Flyout text should be smaller and unbolded, we already know it is a hyperlink. Decrease line spacing.
Main story headers could be decreased in half and we would still notice the importance.
One last thing, the site seems longer to load, can you speed it up some?

I didn't mind the old look and can certainly live with the new one. What I don't like is MSNBC asking me twice a day to 'take a survey'.

My browser clears cookies on exit, which might be part of the problem. But you might want to look at that survey bug, cause it's bugging me... :)

Add me to the long list in favor of the dropping the rollover flyouts. I spend most of my time looking for a safe harbor for my cursor so I can navigate without the flyout covering the page.

The organization of the page is terrific including the ability to select the number of stories.

You designed your site to not work ideally for 20% of your visitors? There are other ways to use up screen space than forcing all users to accept a wide screen layout. Just because your competitors are doing it does not make it a good idea.

My complaints:
1) The site is too wide. Thanks for making my three year-old laptop obsolete for reading news! For games and other processor intensive applications, I can understand. For browsing the web?

2) The "my news" sitting in the same frame as other items. What if I want both "more news" and "my news"? I typically use my keyboard cursor key to scroll up and down looking for interesting tidbits. Now, you're forcing me to use my mouse, tab in a frame as well as scroll left to right.

3) There really seems to be less content available from the main page. A lot of the things I seem to remember (probably custom news items) seeing and found interesting are no longer in view

I think you folks did a real nice job on the redesign.

Nice use of color; the fly-outs aren't all that annoying; like the positioning of the multimedia related stories (they stand out better than before); seems there are fewer 'in your face' advertisements; the wide view is much welcomed on my 15.4" laptop (no horizontal scrolling is necessary); very well thought out makeover.

Congrats...MSNBC has always been my primary news source on the web.

I don't like the new design. It's too confusing. I appreciate the local weather and news, but the top stories are not well organized. They don't jump out enough and they're spread all over the place - some in the margins, some below. It would be nice if they were grouped together. I don't like the white background either. This is too much like the CNN site, and I don't go to the CNN site for the same reasons I don't favor this site.

I'm still not convinced that the new design is an improvement over the old; however, I think that the 'last second scramble' to seamlessly incorporate local weather into the top banner was a stroke of genius. It looks great from a design perspective, it's unobtrusive and it fills a glaring void that the redesign team originally missed.

Now, if you can get news about my personal stocks and sports teams back to where they should be, life would be good …

After using the new layout for most of a week I find I am dissappointed. I appreciate the wider page, and some of the reorgaization is more logical.

Fundamentally I come to this site for content. I find significantly less content visible at one time in the new site then the old. I would have expected that using a wider format would have increased the displayed content, so finding less content is extremely disappointing. I am starting to investigate other sites to see if I can get more of what I need from them.

Nice re-design.
Will take some getting used to, though.

I have to say, the fly-outs now kill me.

Everytime I move my mouse to try to click on a story, one of the flyouts (from the top part of the site) activates, covering the headline of the story I was about to click on.

I would much prefer a click, rather than a hover, to make them work.

This site's layout has improved greatly! I appreciate the changes. Msnbc.com has been my homepage for about 6+ years, so this is refreshing!

10x7 makes a huge difference. If you haven't changed you montior resolution to reflect 10x7, learn to do it quickly!

Fly Outs are wayyy too touchy "Adjust the Time" it takes to flyout.

Once you open a flyout, the connecting flyouts are also wayyyyyyy too touchy. Slow them puppies down!

Fix the flyouts and it's an A+.

The only thing that really needed to be done to enhance the site was to do away with those incredibly annoying 'Vibrant Media' in-text advertisments. I can deal with the menu fly-outs, and appreciate the fact that you make it possible to disable them. But this Vibrant Media crap has got to go. No matter how many times you go into Vibrant and click on Disable, they still come up - even during the same session. They never turn off, no matter what your cookie status is. I absolutely hate these. Please, get rid of them, or enforce the disable option.
