Things were well laid out and made sense. Now everything is cluttered and it's a struggle to find everything. I know you won't, but please change it back to how it was before.

I really like the ability to move the sections up or down. Unfortunately, that's one of the only things I really like so far.

The first thing that strikes me is that there are just too many places to look, and since the pictures and headlines aren't in any visual order, it's impossible to get anything from it without pausing to read each portion. I can't just glance at it and see what stories I want to read or what might be important. Since *everything* is trying to jump out at me, it's difficult for the brain to just pick out important words in headlines.

The boxes and sections are just too bulky, and again, there's too much going on visually. In fact, the main reason I find the ability to switch the sections around so helpful is that I can no longer just sweep through the rest of it to find what I want.

I also agree that the ads seem far more invasive in this new layout. They actually stick out more than the stories do, which is just a huge turn off.

I'm willing to wait and see how you guys tweak and change over the next week or so, but I won't be visiting as often, and I certainly won't keep MSNBC.com as my home page if visual chaos is the new norm.

Change is usually a good thing, and the ability to move the sections up and down on the new design is a good thing. Most of the other changes are not. However, moving my stock list from the main page and making each section a full page width reduces my ability to quickly scan the information I want. The two column format was a much better format. Why not allow users to select the sections to display, rather than just moving them to the bottom, and change the page format, one or two columns? I have been a loyal reader for many years but I may not be much longer.

I peruse several news site daily, this one has gone from near best to unqualified worst. The layout is distracting, non-intuitive, the tabloid-style huge headlines are visually offensive. The amount of information per screen seems much less and appears to be placed at random. I am sure that intelligent, capable experts have redesigned the site with some end in mind -- I feel their goals and mine no longer coincide.

I hope that MSNBC doesn't dismiss their reader's negative responses as simply resistance to change.

This is an information portal, so I'm perplexed as to why you even present it to me (more like force it on me) without customized content. I want my weather, sports and financial info first think in the morning - and I want it all in the top part of the page so I'm not scrolling around for it. If I have to wait weeks for that, chances are MSNBC isn't going to be my homepage anymore. That earns you a D grade. The fact that there isn't a prominent link at the top to see my old homepage while we're waiting for you to finish development take you to an F!

In terms of presentation, my first reaction is that there is too much content crammed in and one link doesn't stand out well from another. But, since I have a notebook with 17" screen, I do link the way you use the width of the page effectively.

It will indeed take time to get used to the change; people who liked MSNBC the way it was (including me) tend to be "text" people, not "graphic" people. Changing to all this emphasis on pictures, video, etc. is a tad annoying. I understand why you are doing it, but I'm not fond of the new trend in website design.

On the more specific side, I use IE6, and my text size is set to "medium". Your page does not load correctly unless I reduce that to "small". For example, in the "other top stories" section, I get 7 stories listed, and the 8th just appears as the tops of the letters which I can't really make out at all and cannot click on either. The "send us your first person stories" box does not show at all until I make the text size smaller. Similarly, on your title bar on the bottom of the page, under "categories", the last thing I see is "text&" .. and that's it. "Science" does not show, nor do "travel" and "weather" until I change the font size to "small".

Some regression testing with font sizes.. and various versions of IE would have been helpful. I can't really read small size font (even with glasses), so parts of the new site are not accessible to me at all.

On a related note, in the Newsweek area, I looked for a column that Marc Gellman did in September of this year, and it's disappeared, along with a whole year's worth of his work. There seems to be a collection of columns prior to Sept. 2006, and then starting again this month, but his work over the last year is missing. Could someone please fix that?

Wow...what a bunch of 'mostly' whiny babies. Many of you sound exactly like the typical end user I deal with each day when I implement a new software system in their company. They stomp their feet on the ground and pitch a fit because they want the 'old' system that they always complained about. Good Grief and a big WAAAHHH- we wonder why our government and local municipalities have difficulty with change. The most difficult thing every for 'humans' is change - and pretty much all above obviously concur.

I like the look. However, yes of course it will take some time getting used to. I do agree with having a once touch to get to hotmail. I travel extensively and my blackjack is my appendage. So I depend on my handheld to get to news and hotmail emails - providing a quick connect would be greatly appreciated - one step. It's often the case that the only ones who comment are those who are dissatisfied, and people often don't like any change. I try not to be that way. I am sorry to say, though, that my first impression is similarly unfavorable. I agree with many of the comments above regarding ads, not being able to see many headlines at once, MSNBC having been my favorite news site for years, too much scrolling etc.

It appears to me you did not adequately test this site with users or even for correct functionality. This is simply bad practice.

I use Firefox 2.0. The FIRST think I did was click on "Find out what's new" and ... NOTHING. No response to the click. Right click, and I could open "Take A Tour". I tried it in IE7, and lo and behold, a new window (not a tab!) opens with the Alpha Channel where I am entering these comments (http://alphachannel.msnbc.msn.com/) which is otherwise hard to find. Right clicking on "Find out what's new" in IE gives me a menu "About Macromedia Flash Play 8". In short: Firefox leads to the tour, but only if I right click and "open in new tab", and IE leads to the "Alphachannel", and only in a new window, but if I right click I come here.

There should not be differences in behavior if you are using a different browser.

It seems obvious to me that this new MSNBC is NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. If I were in your shoes, I'd pull it back, as embarrassing as this would be. Do some more testing, tweaking, redesign. You will immediately lose many readers. You may never get them back.

Sorry to be so blunt, as I am sure many people worked hard. But, the web is a place of "instant impressions". Unfortunately, my instant reaction is that I do not like this new format.

P.S. As I go to submit these comments, I see that the area for entering my email address is missing, and the box that "Subject" is missing. So, it appears that "Your e-mail address" is followed by the pre-filled subject "re: Welcome to the new msnbc.com".

Read your note that you are not yet finished, and that our personalization will come back in the next couple days. I can wait for that. But, my first impression, you've made your site overbearing with graphics that camoflage the ease-of-read that had made MSNBC the best of the news sites. Very sorry you chose this direction. You may have crammed more stuff on your new first page, but you must understand that I am not interested in much of this stuff, and it only serves to hid what I am a regular visitor for.
Clean it up, restore more personalization. Measure your success by clean design and repeat visits before pure volume of text and graphics.

The thing is, though, what I miss are things it says RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE are coming back: My local news and weather, sports scores, stock markets, etc. If the site were staying as it is, yes - I'd definitely be going elsewhere. But it's NOT STAYING THIS WAY!! I'll give them a chance to finish it before making up my mind. For now, I really like being able to arrange the categories of news, etc., and decide how much I get of each (though I do wonder who chooses which are the "top 5" / "top 10" stories...).

OK - I like the fly-outs better, but they're too far down on the left. I HATE the "roll over to expand" ad at the top. It takes up valuable real estate, and as a result news is pushed down the page.

Why does the MSNBC banner heading need to be so darn big? I know I'm at MSNBC. As with the top ad, it simply takes up too much room.

When you finally restore local weather, etc. (though I don't look at it frequently) and stocks (which I do look at), please put it where that current ad is on the right. I'm tired of having to constantly scroll to view stuff.

No biggie, but where did the "updated XX minutes ago" go?

All-in-all, I'm not sure I can get used to this, and frankly, I liked the old way better.

On a widescreen monitor, the new design is much better than the old site - the centered layout alone is a massive improvement. I can't imagine how I managed with the old design after using the new site. People tend to dislike change and initially complain a lot. Give it some time, and people will grow to appreciate the changes. And thank goodness you have implemented a site that is compatible with multiple browsers. Welcome to the true vision of the Web! I like where it's going...the sub news storries to the left of the main story is very easy on my eyes. However, I think the left should just be all top stories in the world (maybe you can personalize? Finally, I think the site is too wide. I still prefer this cite to CNN.com's layout, I switched to MSNBC as my "go to web news site" after their last update. The new web page is fine. It will take awhile to get used to it. I do like the fact that the sections are bigger and easier to read. Also, the video clips are broken onto each section.

I like the the white space between the sections and type. I believe they teach us that as children in elementary school.

All the complaints, well my guess is these folks have little screens to view their information.

It may take me a bit to figure out how to maneuver through the content and, I am sure I'll figure it out. It's very appealing to my eyes and I like the flow.

Give it time, your content is still tops and that will carry the day.

It's amazing, some of the people here make a point that initial responses to redesigns are always bad, then they turn around and do exactly that! If anything people, give it a few days before you attack it and kill it, I mean, MSNBC's had the same defacto look for around 5 years now with minor modifications and I think we can all expect we aren't going to love it the first moment.

Anyway, the graphical change is kinda nice in all honesty, and the centering of the page just makes it seem to actually use the space better. I'll be holding judgment for now, but so far, an interesting mix.

I think I will get used to the new layout pretty well. It doesn't bother me too much, and I find the ability to get rid of sections like Travel entirely quite nice. One thing though, I find that I totally ignore the highlighted stories when I am scanning, and only looking at the list format headlines. I ignore the #1 story and the multimedia in favor of the hopefully juicy new in between.

I view MSNBC.COM throughout the day, but for some reason didn't even know the change was coming till I logged in today.

I haven't looked around a lot, but was pissed to discover the drop-down menus remain on the left navigation pane, as they did on the old site.

This is the only part about MSNBC I absolutely HATE. No one uses drop-down menus like this to navigate, and every time my mouse drifts to the left of the screen those stupid drop-down menus pop out on the page, covering up what I'm trying to view.

For example, if I want to view Sports (Or Entertainment, whatever) I will click on the Sports link on the left, which takes me to the sports page, in which I then continue navigating. I can't fathom anyone moving their mouse over "Sports" then slogging through the drop-down menu that ensues, and clicking on anything. It's by far the most horrible part of msnbc.com.

PLEASE, for the life of God, get rid of those drop-down menus on the left navigation pane.

They have bugged the hell out of me for years on the old site, and now they remain. :(

Overall the new design is a huge improvement. It leverages some of the best aspects of new web technologies but doesn't go overboard like ABCnews does. The bottom half of the page is great. It's the top part of the page that's messy.

As a user I have no interest in which NBC property the content came from. Those awful drop down menus are not useful The header is a cluttered corporate-compromise mess. And the featured story does not have any real visual weight. The explore section seems out of place at the top of the page as well. So all you need to do is scroll past the visual clutter at the top and there's a cool site down below.

I actually like the new look and layout. Had no problem so far navigating around the site and finding my usual haunts. However, there are loads of issues with using it in Firefox, hence I've had to load up Microsoft Internet Explorer just to post this comment.

That said, once you figure out the the web is not completely dominated by Internet Explorer and start to cater for us Firefox users the site will be more attractive as a news destination.

Don't sweat the bashing, since most folks who will comment here are looking for a place to submit their negative feedback. Most folks will appreciate the new design, which is clearly well-thought-out and effective. And half of the bashers here are just reluctant to see any change, but they'll come around.

I'm glad to see that MSNBC, which had what I thought was the second worst site among the tv news networks (fox news being the worst), now has the best site of the crop.

And it's not about the aesthetic, which is nice, but the layout and organization of things that really makes this a success. The users will come around to it.

You should be very happy with a very well-done redesign! Congratulations!

Wow! I love the new design - it's clean, well organized, and very easy to find the things I need. Visually it's dazzling. The new features allowing customization of the layout on the home page are outstanding. MSNBC has been my home site for years. There's no question that the old design, while functional, was getting tired and needed a facelift. This vaults MSNBC well ahead of the competition and certainly exceeds my expectations. Great job!

Most peeps are naturally resistant to change, so it's not surprising to see some initial complaints. Don't let that detract from the great progress showcased here. Looking forward to seeing the site develop as more of the features are brought online.

I certainly hope that the absence of the daily crossword puzzle is not a permanent feature of this new format. The crossword is one of my husband and my favorite feature. Overall, i like the new design. A periodic rethinking and refresh of any sites design is essential in my book - evolve or fossilize In particular, the channels + headlines approach is simple in concept and easy to use.

One glaring, if not visually offensive, design element: the upper-right ad block should not be the same size or larger than your lead image - you are a news & information site, not a tabloid.

The page loads quickly now - so shrink the ads, enlarge the thumbnail images and showcase your lead image. The compelling image will pull my attention to the next level for any featured item. Emphasize the visual - you are a multi-media information service...

I'll resist jumping on the "I hate it" bandwagon and use it a few days before I make a judgement on the changes. As a fellow web developer (on a much smaller scale), I know how hard it is to do what you're doing.

My only comment for now is now having local preferences available at launch was a poor decision (IMO). It's forced me to go to other websites to get info I need now, while I'm waiting for those features to re-appear. Hopefully I won't find a new site I like better than MSNBC.

Here's to wishing you luck in the changeover and a sincere hope that when all is said and done, the new design will let me keep MSNBC as my homepage!

Is this just a way to try squeezeing out some pay-per-click ad revenues in the event I inadvertantly click on a link? Please...don't cheapen MSNBC.com this way.

It appears as though the new design is less about providing a better news interface and more about cramming as much advertising space on the home page as possible. The new home page is incredibly slow loading and lacks the color that is NBC's hallmark. Will the peacock soon be all black? I'm not a fan of the new layout, at least not as it is now. Unlike many of the other commenters, I didn't customize the old site at all, but that's what I liked -- that I didn't have to do anything custom for everything to be at my fingertips. Now I can't find things I used to be able to click on within a second of landing on the front page. And for lack of a more technical take on things, the site now looks much more like an entertainment site than a news one. (In non-coincidental news, once you navigate there, I do like the new entertainment page.) I'm only 33 so it's a bummer to already be in "hey you kids, get off my lawn!" mode, but this redesign might have gotten me there. You are my home page at work and home but I might have to switch it to CNN.com. I don't love their site, but I prefer it to your new version.

In terms of constructive advice, hopefully there will at least be a way to move the main categories left nav menu up, so you don't have to scroll to get to things you know you'll want to click on at every visit.

I'm very impressed with this new layout, as a web designer myself. The colors are pleasing on the eyes, the layout is clean and easy to navigate, and I like the effect on the msnbc text, adding a sort of bright glow from it.

I see a lot of negativity near the top of this page, however I think that is largely due to the difficulty in using something different than you are used to.

The main (home) page is too busy. It feels like there's too much competing for my attention and I don't immediately understadn where to look. The home pahge was far simpler (read: that's a good thing) and easier to digest when there was one clear lead story with a photo and the rest of the headlines were text along the side or underneath. Seems like a lot of white space is wasted on this new layout, too.

Great job with the redesign! I love the new layout, especially the variety of news at the top of the page. And the new section layouts (U.S. News, Business, etc.) are great...I actually look at those now because they are much easier to read and navigate. Once again, great job!

I was a big fan of both CNN and MSNBC... until, of course, they redesigned it in such an over-bearing manner. I no longer visit CNN, and the similarities in design for MSNBC may result in the same. In short, these new redesigns lack a complete sense of information architecture (IA) which I believe is because you are basing redesign elements on focus groups or an IA's personal whims and NOT full-blown community input. There was a "beta" period for the MSN Video redesign, but none for the _real_ news site. Why not? This is a flaw in the strategies and bound to backfire.

Now, I spend my energy on CNN and MSNBC finding the news stories -- and not actually enjoying them! That being said, even your usual news article layout is challenging: too much HTML/CSS/JS code is used for the header which increases the load times for the page. The new Live.com site can do that because it is not information-loaded as MSNBC is; for this news site, you should streamline the header elements (read: smaller and less interactive) and better distinguish the home page "main stories" section at the top of the page. Heck, even the MSNBC logo is too large and obnoxious; HELLO, I think I know where I am!!!

On a positive note: I like the cleaner news article font (taking advante of ClearType?) and media tabbing for content buckets (news, video, photos).

I get on the MSNBC website just about everyday, and have been for a few years now. I liked the old site, but I like the new updated site as well. There are a couple of things that are missing on the front page, tho: The weather section and the stock section that shows the stock market readings from the Dow, Nasdaq, and
S%P 500. I feel like I can navigate thru this site pretty well so far. I have MSN as my home page so I have no problem getting into my hotmail email page at all. I read a lot of unhappy comments as well as a lot of happy ones. You just can't win for losing when you make a big change on a website! But, see if you can work on the site some more so that everybody are at least halfway satisfied with it! Will keep coming back to the site to read the news, tho. Good work, people!

I'm not so sure that I like the new and improved look of the site. I think that is because I have had (and will continue to have) MSNBC as my home page for many years.

I agree with one of your other readers and like the way that you can change the content for each section. What if you started out with less rather than more under each section? Only 4 stories per section. Do you think tabs for each section at the top of the page would help with navigation? I kind of like the new layout. Always looking to learn new things.

It is true the previous format was easy to use. This new format will take some time to get 'checked out'on. I do like the option of adjusting where subjects like 'news' and business' are located. Also, there is more 'highlighting' of stories which I also like.

To start, I really like the new design including the colors, layout, etc.
The only thing I don't like? The site has always used the "pop out" feature when you hold your mouse over certain headings, but there are just too many of those now - I can't put my mouse anywhere on the page without having them show up when and where I don't want them.

My jaw is dropping over all the negative feedback you're getting here. There's always some resistance to any change to any familiar old shoe, and inability to find features that are still in development may be provoking other complaints. And maybe it's mostly people who are unhappy are taking the time to post here.

I absolutely LOVE the changes you have made. The flow is much better. The pizzazz is off the charts as featured stories pop better. I can scour many more headlines and select how many are displayed. MSNBC has gone from being my favorite news site that I spend a good half hour at per day to just becoming my Home Page. Thank you. I look forward to the coming additions and improvements in progress.

MSNBC will no longer be my becaue of the many changes that have been made. The page is to complicated for one. It took me 20mins to even find this section. Also the page is to bright. Noone wantes to look at a white screen at 6am, we want a calm at home feeling page. MSNBC has been my home page for many years. I am now thinking of changing to a different home page. Change is always for the better, however your new design requires far too much effort. The public should not have to read highly detailed book chapters to get updated on daily and weekly news. The new design is far too wide and contains too many secondary pages.

It seems to take forever for the main page to load up...too many bells and whistles, I guess. When I click on a story, it goes right there. I read it and then, when I go back to the main page, it's the same story...sit and wait. Sigh. With a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 and the IE text size set to 'medium' some of the items in the banner overlap each other and the "features" row of dropdowns wraps around. It only looks correct if I set the IE test size to 'smallest'. Spread out the fields in the banner area so that it looks correct in other resolutions and text sizes.

To me the new home page is not only jumbled, scattered and very disorganized, but it keeps changing, too, to that (at least at the top) I never know where I'm going to find things. Please stop doing that. Is you main headline on the right or the left? Are the next couple of "important" stories on the left or the right? And why can you ALWAYS put that little camera icon next to videos so that I don't have to click them to find out if I want to bother video right now? Often I just don't have the time (or I'm notr in a good location, like work?) to have an unknown video show up on the screen, complete with unexpected sound.

And why does this new home page seem so bleeping slow to load compated with before? Why did we need all of these issues, anyway? Still voting a big thumbs down.
