Don't kill your television (we're still in beta)

Posted by Stokes Young on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 6:22 PM PT

We are the web site of NBC News, and the primary goal of our new video player is to help you experience the stories you want to see when you want to see them. We want you to have a terrific experience watching Nightly News in the morning or TODAY tonight or Meet the Press on Tuesday.

So when our editor-in-chief asked me how this blog post was coming a few days ago, I told her what I still believe: Our product should communicate itself.

The video should be big and crisp but reliably load at the speed with which NBC News crews deploy to cover stories around the world. You should be able to quickly find what you want, whatever it is: Anne Thompson on what may be the death march of the penguins, Brian Williams and Keith Olbermann on the steroid scandal rocking baseball, Willie Geist satirizing the news on our very own ZeitGeist vlog, or Hoda Kotb on why women love geeks. And, for you technologically adventurous types, you should be able to watch Hoda’s geek love package on the widest possible array of operating systems and modern browsers, including Safari, Firefox, Flock, Camino, Opera and Omniweb. You will need Flash 9 if you don't already have it installed, and JavaScript must be enabled.

Here’s some more enticement to go watch good video clips (and play with the player) instead of reading this: Dawna Friesen reports, exclusively for nightly.msnbc.com, on a Nairobi man’s dream come true. CNBC’s Power Lunch team learns what it takes to rent a Lamborghini. Chris Matthews wonders if the writer’s strike is giving presidential hopefuls a late-night free ride. Countdown’s Oddball, meanwhile, has an electric eel powering a Christmas tree.

If you've clicked on one of the links above and come back, I'm sure you've noticed that, despite all of the thoughtful feedback you've given us over the years, we still have advertising in our video player. A few notes on that: First, my cat needs to eat. Second, and far more importantly, it's not free for NBC News to gather important news in difficult places. Third, look for some real viewer-centric innovation on this front soon.

Still reading about the player instead of playing? Here’s a compromise: get all meta and let msnbc.com’s Dara Brown guide you through our new player, from within the player.

If you’re still here, below are some tips on what you should check out when you finally do go watch some clips.

When you launch a video, the list of thumbnails and headlines to the left of the player is your current playlist. You can scroll it and click on a thumbnail to switch to that video, or click the little blue + sign to add it to “My playlist.”

To the left of the playlist is the navigation, where you can browse for the videos you want. Up top are, um, top videos, then most viewed videos, weird news and the playlist you have started to create with the little blue + sign. Below that are categories that match the sections of our site, from U.S. news to Travel. Click on the “Entertainment” button to get the latest clips in that category — or roll over it and click “latest clips” to get the same list, or navigate right to topics like “Television” or franchises like Countdown’s “Keeping Tabs” or clips from Access Hollywood. The navigation works the same way under “Shows,” where you can browse clips by the NBC News broadcasts they come from.

The related links and controls below the player should be pretty intuitive, but you may be a bit surprised when you click the full-screen button, which is my favorite part of our new experience. The overlays you first see at the bottom — the controls — and the left — the navigation — will disappear, but you can always bring them back by mousing over the bottom or left of your screen. In other words, you keep all of the goodness of the player controls and navigation without leaving the full-screen experience:

You’ll notice at the top right that there’s a “Beta” tag. Here’s why:

1.      We are aware of a few glitches with the player but suspect that you might find some more in the coming weeks. All of the research, focus groups, hallway conversations, designing, engineering, doughnuts and testing in the world don’t guarantee full success in the wild world we work in. So we ask you first for a liberal dose of feedback and second for a pinch of patience as we keep cranking to get this as perfect as we can.

2.      We’re still chasing in some very important details. Namely: Search (you can, of course, search for our video in the fine interface at MSN Video, our parent and steadfast partner), Embed (coming soon, we promise) and Live (for a little while, at least, our Live video will play outside of this experience).

Please send us feedback and comment away.

I think people are being a little too demanding.

High Def uses extraordinary amounts of bandwidth and the USA is way behind the rest of the world when it comes to enhanced Internet; like they have in much of Europe and Asia.  Ok, yes we do have it better then in Africa and Antarctica.  Nobody is streaming in high def, NOBODY!  Spammers aren't helping matters either!

That being said, it is better, but back to work!
Very good design, great definition, easy to use, but why any content about Spears or Hilton? They're not newsworthy!
Your old video used to play without enabling "allow third party flash content to store data on your computer" in the global storage settings of flash player, why now?  How secure are we with this settings enabled?
I'm using it in Seamonkey on XP, which is a lot more success than I've had with the previous players offered here on MSNBC. One thing I came across however is that it doesn't seem to work if the user has used the Flash Settings Manager and disallowed third party sites to store data on the computer. No error messages are displayed, just a blank window pops up. I went into the Flash settings manager and checked the third party data box and then allowed msnbcmedia.msn.com to store some data on the website storage settings tab. After that it worked fine.

Looks great, a vast improvement over the older one! Performance and resolution are wonderful!
A couple comments:
- The captions aren't quite enough.  Suggest you provide additional descriptive text when you hover the mouse over a thumbnail
- Volume level on commercials is much higher than the news clips (just like on broadcast TV!).  Is that intentional?  I don't like it.
- How fresh are these clips?  Can you put a time stamp on them to indicate when they were posted or updated?
This is absolutely wonderful. I cannot believe my eyes. Mouths move with the words, pictures are crip and clear, sound is fantastic. Man you have really come to the front of internet news. Keep the improvements coming and we do understand you need to feed your cat, so do we.
The new video player works great on the iMac Tiger using Firefox latest version 2.0.  The graphic is clear and crisp. The navigation is very easy to use.
However, the broadcast is not the same as seen on the nightly news on TV because the closed captioning is missing.  Please update the player to allow an option to view the captioning as shown on the TV broadcast.  Thanks and keep up the good work!
These are a few items I hope are remedied in the Beta testing.

Yes you made a lot of handy-dandy ready made play lists in the video redesign. But in the previous video player design, I used to be able to move around the play order of video clips and arrange them in the sequence I want like. It was a feature where you could click and drag the video clips in any position in the queue while the current is playing. Please incorporate that feature again. It is very cumbersome not to have it available.

I agree and endorse the previous statements about running fewer commercials between news stories and not having the play list slide off the screen when the news clip is playing. There is also another annoying problem that occurred with the introduction of your re-design website. The volume of video clip of news stories is so low I need to turn up the volume, but as soon as the commercials are played, the volume is blaringly loud. What a pain constantly raising and lowing the volume every few news clip even with the new volume controls on the video player redesign.

Thanks for giving us an opportunity for feedbacks.

Good picture but really bad implementation.  It hogs over 80% of my P4 2.8 Ghz CPU when playing in the default size window (and about 35% of a P4 with hyperthreading).  Sombody please tell the programmers to go back and figure out how to write efficient code.

PS:  I'm a Computer Science instructor, and I plan to use this as an example of what happens when programmers don't consider CPU efficiency and probably test on quad-core Xeons.
Mac user. OS 10.4.11   This is the first time I have been able to watch your videos on Safari. It seems to work well on my Mac.
I like the look but it would really be easier to find something with a keyword search. I can't seem to find this feature. I especially like the My Playlist option. I would really be careful with the amount of content in the format. The content can get way too busy and become overwhelming to the basic web user.
Love It, Love It, Love It.  I had stopped trying to watch anything on the old MSNBC video because it became like trying to pull teeth.  The news here in Fairbanks is horrible and I was desperately seeking news that I could watch where the video wouldn't constantly shut off and then start back up.  Thankyou MSNBC for restoring my confidence in your video applications.  I always enjoy goog news.
I really like it and find it a valuable source for news stories at any time (I particularly like Hardball). But has already been noted, I don't like the play list disappearing when the ads come up.
Very clean interface! I would add to the comments above to suggest that you add the ability to click on the Nightly News for the day, so that the entire broadcast runs rather than selecting each clip and not knowing if it is from the most recent Nightly News.

Thank you!
Well thanx for making us your beta testers. No that was a joke.Really. I think what you killed here is my interest in going to MSNBC to view news stories. Bad Dog! Swat! Swat! (I'm not swatting the dog, but, the bugs in this s/w)
So far this is the best new thing about MSNBC, mainly because finally it works almost seamlessly with Firefox
Way too many commercial interruptions, the playlist disappears during the ads, and videos I added to the playlist never played; other videos from the default playlist played instead.

I give it two thumbs down.
One-click add to play-list and save sessions is a must have for your BETA PLAYER...would be nice to have similar clips - made from past views load automatically new clips...

Just inform viewer about the cookie thats gonna be installed - and why - and what - plus more minority coverage would be nice.

TFYT
This is media player is not perfect for everyone.  I want to use closed captions on all media players which it does not meet the requirements or meet the standard with (ADA) American disabilities Act.  We have people who have hearing difficulties or are deaf like to watch with closed captions available. Your media player does not provide that, but your television news show does.  We have millions of people who use the internet and watch the videos.  If I could make a better media player, I would do it.
Considering that I'm an American living outside the US, your service is very important to me.  It's hard for me to keep up with the local US news in the areas that are important to me in a foreign country.  When your service works, it works well, when it doesn't work, it REALLY doesn't work.

I think speed is the main priority.  It comes up fairly fast but I noticed on older computers, while it loads faster than it plays it seems like the sound doesn't match people's lip movements.  Also the video doesn't seem as crisp as it used to be.

In addition something that is frustrating is why doesn't MSNBC Link in the videos from MSN??  Why is there no search for videos?  Why is it that I can never find videos by Erin Burnett? Or Cramer?

I'm sorry I'm ranting but it just seems like for all the technology you are putting into this you could do so much more.

Where's tagging?  Where's my log in screen for my videos to be customized to my needs?  Where are the videos from newsweek?

Oh and the "Up Next" screen you get after you finish a clip is annoying.  You don't start loading until after that screen.  Maybe you can put that some place else so I know what will be up next.

Can we create something where I pick a topic and automatically all videos on that topic appear?  Maybe in order of most recent, or imporant rated by users?  You rate your articles, why not your videos?

I can only see the titles of about 4 videos at a time on the play list.  Maybe you could squeeze one more in there by dropping the icon size?

I guess you really need to ask yourself, if this player / site is just to put reruns of MSNBC TV on the web.  If that's the case then fine.  But as a user I think of this as a MSNBC "resource".  For example you link in articles from Businessweek and other websites.  It's like you have a network, so why not apply the same to video player?

You have the potential to become the #1 news video site on the web for the US.  The one place everyone goes to get ALL the news.

Hope this helps
It is a big improvement......
508 Accessibility Compliance? I don't see any Closed Captioning functionality. Pretty shocked for a TV/Press company. You might want to use this function when users mute the video.

Gotta say it, "Hiding the nav during the advertising is really annoying."

Also pop-ups are so old. Your using Adobe Flash technology - embed the player in the core site or use layers. Pop-ups and SEO don't work well together anyway.
Love using your web site but, don't like the fact that you have left Mac user's out in the cold for watching video with your new player!  Neither Safari nor FireFox is able to play video since your update.
Are you doing like "Telstra" Australia and embedding
active-X in Flash?  If so, I guess Mac users will never be able to watch video here again...
I run big international division and rely on streaming content as I travel the globe.  MSNBC's is the best I've seen to date.  Kudos for raising the bar!
The beta is an improvement - for news, etc.
Improvements needed: (l)Unable to select videos during advertisements. (2)Painfully loud volume advertisements. So I leave the room to go to the loo, get snacks, etc., returning when the noise has diminished.
How about more news (Lester Holt?) on the weekends?
What is the point of having the delay between the movement of the video selector bar and the actual videos to its left?  Otherwise the new player's okay.
I LOVE IT, ITS THE BEST..DONT CHANGE A THING. NO MORE JITTER UPON LOADING. 100% BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE.
Ads were easy to view. Nothing else was. Of course, the things you were showing really weren't worth my time. Pretty sad. Didn't see anything worth watching. Are you sure you're a news service? Doesn't look like news to me. But then again, I'm an adult and not the demo you're looking for.
great next step - keep going. Pub is easily muted, and I sense the length is less...but that's uncertain. For Keith/Chris fans the format and multiples seems much easier to manage.
Great Video!
This is the best player.

I think you can end the beta test and go live!
Better than ANYTHING on the web.

Have to wait and see how content evolves.

Good job!!
It was poorly designed.  The previous video environemnt would allow us to select any video we want via a large region of thumbnails, at any moment.  Your new format makes it much more difficult to do so.  You have to keep scrolling down and it is not even possible when commercials appear.  Some Usability assessment would clearly give D- to this design.  Please go back to the previous one!
LOVE the new format with one exception...  The audio volume between the ads and the news content is HUGELY discordant.  One second the volume is fine and the next you're struggling frantically to turn it down before your neighbors call the police.
I accidentally clicked on sometething and this came up - you know, its not half bad really .... but please ..... loose the adverts - I mean why show me an add for boeing I mean WHY? - please dont waste my time with this...... ta
Great new web design, love it and streams a lot better than before, Great Job
Videos finally work flawlessy with Safari!  Thank you!

Really like the new visual layout, increase the video resolution, full screen does not look so great.

Why don't you have captions? 28 million people in the U.S. have a hearing loss, and even hearing people like closed captions too because they can't turn on the volume if they want to watch news
videos at work.
re: Don't kill your television (we're still in beta)

I could not get the video player to load, I just get a black screen with MSNBC.COM video player, listed on the bottom, any suggestions?  I have windows XP.
What a great job.  This is by far the best delivery of news video anywhere on the internet.  The start time (and without buffering issues) is amazing.  I love the ease of searching through the available video and how seamlessly the next one begins once it's selected.  You have really raised the bar!
First, the lack of the balloon describing the videos is an enourmous lack.
Secondly, it loads and plays, loads and plays.  When the old video did this, I hit "pause", and went and did other stuff till it loaded. Here the pause button doesn't work.....
Noticed flaw - Videos freeze up. The transition from one video to the other continuously locks up. It freezes up everything - even the buttons. I have to back track, to the previously played video, and then hit the next video again. The picture on the screen freezes, and if it plays the same video over again, it is lighter and fuzzier.

Still loving the layout and features! :O)
Just had a thought - maybe it is the commercials that cause the screen to freeze. I read the complaints here about commercials, but I don't think I have seen any. I am sure that is what is causing it to freeze.
new video player and web site are outstanding, by far the best on the internet.
I see this as the emerging of the old and tired battle for control that we get from tv. In other words it reminds me why I prefer reading, or why
my wife and I threw out the tube.

Great look. Nice layout. The problem I have is the images don't sync well with the sound as *before* Or anywhere near as smooth.
Keep in mind not everyone has a new PC. Please keep your FLV rate user-friendly as before!

XP 3.0 kbps DSL
I love the new video player. Just a few thoughts thoughts. The selection of thumbnails on the left side moves very quick if you are not careful. Also The switch to options at the end of the video should be able to interact with the play list.
I will like the posibility of watching full episodes of Hardball or Tucker, for example ,and not little clips.

Your idea is fantastic, for the first time I have real TV in my computer
This is what I have been waiting for going on a year now. I get most my news from the net but I wanted something that was more user friendly. this does just that.
Great Job and thank you
Please enable being able to continue to queue during commercials.  Also, I like the option of being able to resize my window to a particular size, i don't necessarily watch it full screen all the time.
This is a really dumb move. Now all I get is this black screen pop up. How about some instruction as how to use this new one? I guess we need to compromise our security to your videos now is that correct? No video nothing.  What you need to do allow those of us who are unable to see the video in the new ways to have link to get the vid the old way.
OH, I FORGOT:
  FREEZES
  CRASHES IE 7 (HARD)

- SO WHAT ARE YOUR H/W S/W REQUIREMENTS TO SEE THE NEWS UNADULTERATED BY SUBSTANDARD PRESENTATION - OR AT ALL (BESIDES IE-7 ON XP-PRO WITH AUTOMATICALLY INSTALLED UPDATES)?

OR DOES ADOBE HAVE AN OPERATING SYSTEM THAT THEY WANT ME TO INSTALL
